1931-
Painter

Fotografia de Óleo sobre tela de Jorge Pinheiro (1962) / Oil Painting on canvas by Jorge Pinheiro (1962)Jorge Pinheiro was born in Coimbra on 7 October 1931.

After attending a commercial course, he enrolled in the Porto Fine Arts School, where he studied Painting, between 1955 and 1963, and completed the degree with full marks, just like the painters Ângelo de Sousa and Armando Alves and the sculptor José Rodrigues, with whom he founded the Grupo dos Quatro Vintes [The Four Twenties Group - a hint to their final course mark] in 1968.

He has participated in group exhibitions since 1954, and in solo exhibitions since 1958. In his first solo exhibition, he showed drawings, watercolours and gouaches at the Centro Transmontano do Porto.
He was one of the first ten founders of Árvore – Cooperativa de Actividades Artísticas, in Porto, and was a great friend of the poet Eugénio de Andrade.
He taught at ESBAP from 1963 to 1976, and in that year he began teaching at the Lisbon Academy of Fine Arts. He still meets his colleagues from the University of Porto at the Café S. Lázaro, for their after lunch meetings.

Desenho de Jorge Pinheiro a Tinta da China (1987) / Chinese Ink Drawing by Jorge Pinheiro (1987)With a scholarship awarded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in 1966 he went on a study trip across Europe (Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Italy and Spain). Between 1969 and 1970, again on a scholarship from the Foundation, he studied Semiotics of Painting in Paris.
Between the 1960s and 1980s, his art separated from the school training style and grew into geometric abstract research, although he abandoned it in the work series "Reis" [Kings] (1973-1974) and "Mapas" [Maps] (1976). In 1977, he returned to pictorial figures in Drawing, and in 1980 in Painting, maintaining, however, an interest in geometry.

Interestingly, this group exhibited their work for the first time at the Dominguez Alvarez Gallery, owned by Jaime Isidoro.

The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art dedicated the exhibition D'aprés Fibonacci and the world out there, based on a ideia by Pedro Cabrita Reis and with exhibition design by Eduardo Souto de Moura, displayed to the public between september 15, 2017 and july 7, January 2018.

In May 2017 he was honored at a conference at Cooperativa Árvore.

He collaborates with architects and landscape architects, and illustrates books of authors such as Mário Cláudio, Luísa Dacosta, Adília Alarcão, Manuel Ferreira Genet and Ilse Losa.
He lives and works in São Pedro do Estoril.
